Eat well

< back to contents | next page>

Good nutrition and appropriate eating habits are important throughout life to maintain good health.

You need to balance the energy going into your body, through what you eat and drink, and the energy your body uses, through physical activity and other bodily functions, to maintain a healthy and steady weight.

For a healthy and nutritious diet:

  • Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods
  • Eat plenty of vegetables (including legumes) and fruit
  • Eat plenty of cereals, breads and pastas
  • Eat a diet low in saturated fat
  • Drink adequate amounts of water and/or other fluids
  • If you drink alcohol, limit your intake
  • Choose foods low in salt and use salt sparingly
  • Include foods high in calcium
  • Use added sugars in moderation
  • Care for your food; prepare and store it correctly.
