Resources for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communitiesIn Australia in 2001 there were 31,300 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples aged 55 years and over, that is 0.2% of the estimated resident population (ABS: < www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/mf/4722.0.55.002?OpenDocument >). Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples live in all parts of Australia, from large cities to very remote communities. They speak numerous languages and belong to many distinct community groups. This diversity means what works for one community may require modification to suit a different community. It is recommended there should be prior consultation with local communities to determine the suitability of specific resources. In recent years little research has been undertaken about falls among people from indigenous communities. There is a clear gap in the literature and the resources developed to address falls in these communities. Some resources of interest include: |
