Overview

Falls occur at all ages - however, unlike falls among children, younger adults and people in their middle years, they can be more serious for people aged over 65.

Research tells us that about one-third of people aged over 65 fall each year. Of these falls, b etween 10-20% result in a serious injury, such as a fracture. Many other falls while not necessarily causing an injury can cause you to lose confidence in undertaking your daily activities. They can affect your independence and quality of life.

What you need to know:

  • Falls are often due to a combination of several causes (also known as risk factors). These can include personal health conditions such as poor eyesight, arthritis, stroke, and incontinence. When these conditions are linked with risks in the environment such as obstacles, spills, and unsafe footwear your risk of falling can increase. Some medicines, or a mix of medicines, can also increase your risk of falling.

  • Having a fall, even one that does not cause an injury, should be reported to your doctor (or health practitioner, such as a physiotherapist or occupational therapist) to find out what caused the fall. Many falls can be avoided by:

    • working with your doctor or health practitioner to reduce your risk of falling,

    • taking extra care in situations where a fall might occur, such as not rushing to answer your telephone.

This section of the site has a lot of information to help you learn more about falls, why they happen and what you can do to prevent falls. The more you know about falls, the more you are able to protect yourself from falling and possible injuries. Find out more about falls and fall-related injuries.
