Staff education and training programsStaff education and resourcing can provide the foundation on which organisations build falls prevention programs. Staff recognition of the magnitude and consequences of falls and the risk factors or causes that can lead to falls, is critical to developing strategies to help prevent falls. Without this information staff cannot confidently promote the falls prevention message or put into practice evidence based falls prevention practices. Education should be provided to all staff, on all shifts, and include a number of sessions and forums, eg. lectures, workshops, interactive and innovative sessions. This should give staff ample opportunity to ask questions during and after sessions. Generally seniors have high regard for health practitioners, and consider them an important source of information. Health practitioners and other staff, eg. home and community care workers, should try to provide accurate information about falls - their causes and management. Equally important is to convey consistent messages that 'falls don't just happen', that falls are not an inevitable part of ageing, and falls can be prevented. PowerPoint presentations, manuals, surveys and a poster to help promote falls prevention awareness have been included on this website. Links to education material for staff working in residential aged care and some falls prevention training courses are also available on this section of the site. Other types of staff education materialA link has been provided to education material for staff in residential aged care services available. |
