Decorative gifThe Victorian HITH Minimum Data Set

The development of the Victorian HITH Minimum Data Set has occurred in consultation with representatives from a broad spectrum of key stakeholders in the HITH arena, including clinicians, management and funding personnel. Prior to the development of the Victorian HITH Minimum Data Set, data sets focused upon either inpatient areas or community based care. Therefore, the individual data sets did not meet the requirements of HITH programs, as these programs cross care boundaries from the acute inpatient setting to the community. The data definitions for the Victorian HITH Minimum Data Set have been drawn from existing data sets, where possible, and new data definitions have been developed specifically for HITH.

The Victorian HITH Minimum Data Set has a total of 57 data elements. These data elements are comprised of:

  • 10 data element concepts, which do not have data collection requirements.
  • 22 data elements that are currently collected for the Victorian Admitted Episodes Dataset (VAED).
  • 25 new HITH specific data elements; 6 of these are already collected for the VAED but have different titles, for example, HITH admission/separation dates and times.
  • 11 data elements are derived. Of these, 5 are already derived for the VAED and there are 6 new HITH specific derived data elements, i.e. HITH outcome, Hours of service provision, Number of interventions, Unplanned returns to hospital from HITH, Unplanned telephone calls and Unexpected staff callouts.

Subsequently, there is a total of 13 new HITH data items that HITH programs will need to collect. These are:

  • Date of HITH intervention
  • Expected outcome
  • Health professional
  • HITH dependency
  • HITH episode number
  • HITH program identifier
  • HITH therapy
  • Mode of intervention
  • Mode of separation from HITH
  • Source of referral
  • Time of cessation of intervention
  • Time of intervention
  • Type of setting of care

A list of data entities and elements from Victorian HITH Data Dictionary can be accessed via this web site as well as a series of definitions of the data elements. Copies of the Data Dictionary and/or an abstract can be sourced from ACA on ACA Order Form PDF icon gif (PDF File 95KB). The HITH Data Dictionary provides detailed definitions of each data element including the context of the data element, relational, representational and administrative attributes.
