National Conference 2001
The 2001 ACA conference, Acute Home Care and Disease Management
2001, was held on Friday 27th of July at the Park Hyatt in Melbourne.
Almost 200 delegates attended the conference, which covered disease
management, HITH, legal and safety issues and e-health presentations.
Dr Michael Walsh, Chief Executive of Bayside Health and Chair of
Patient Management Task Force presented the keynote address titled
"Demand Management, Substitution, Prevention and Future Directions".
In the disease management session, Dr Brian Morton presented "A
collaborative approach to optimising the management of cardiac failure",
which covered work on the MACARF trial, a collaborative heart failure
disease management trial in the North Sydney area.
Dr Robert Vorich presented "Decision Support Software the
Answer for Disease Management 2001 & Beyond?" covering
the Central Bayside Division of General Practice Integrated Care
Program.
In the hospital in the home session, Associate Professor John Turnidge,
Director of Microbiology & Infectious Diseases at Women's and
Children's Hospital, Adelaide presented Antibiotic Infusions in
Acute Home-Based Care and Dr Alex Padiglione Infectious Diseases
Physician and Medical Director of ACA presented new antibiotics.
Sergeant David Short provided advice on safety of healthcare professionals
entering patients' homes while barrister Fiona Connor provided legal
advice regarding documentation for HITH programs and held a mock
court case, in which two "volunteers" took to the stand.
Senior Constable Helen Adams presented a session on recognising
abuse in patients at home, specifically focusing on the elderly.
Sharon Kitt, Business Manager of Bayside E-health ended the day
with an IT session titled "E-health made easy".
The feedback from delegates indicated that the conference was generally
"excellent". The written feedback indicated that future
ACA conferences should continue along the same path.
