Ambulatory Care Australia formerly known as The Victorian Centre for Ambulatory Care Innovation (VCACI) was established in 1997, through a grant from the Acute Health Division of the Victorian Department of Human Services. In July 2002 the name was changed to Ambulatory Care Australia (ACA) to reflect that it had broadened its services and was now operating as a national resource centre. The mission of ACA is:

To support Australian health care providers as regional & international health industry leaders in the development, trialling and evaluation of ambulatory care initiatives involving the convergence of healthcare, technologies and communications.

Home based acute care is a rapidly growing area of health care delivery in Australia. There is a need to establish a local knowledge basis and understanding of ambulatory care in Australia to inform changing clinical practice.

The activities of ACA are underpinned by the belief that people are the major healthcare resource and as such they require support and education related to ambulatory care, hospital in the home and disease management.

ACA acts on the belief that people have a right to access models of care which are patient centred, and to be able to make informed choices about their health management and retain responsibility for their health status.
