Victoria - about us

Aboriginal woman

Victoria is committed to working together towards closing the life expectancy gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Victorians.

Working in partnership with Aboriginal people is critical to achieving health equality. Aboriginal people need to be resourced and supported to reach their full potential through good health and strong community.

Close the Health Gap

The National Partnership Agreement to Close the Gap in Indigenous Health Outcomes (2008) outlines the commitment on behalf of the Commonwealth and state and territory governments to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal Australians and to reduce the life expectancy gap. This is known as the ‘Close the Health Gap’ initiative. In response to the national partnership, $57.97 million over four years has been committed in Victoria for statewide initiatives, working with the Aboriginal community-controlled sector, key stakeholders and the greater community to make Aboriginal health everyone’s responsibility.
