Aboriginal patient identification resources
The Improving Care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Patients (ICAP) program recently launched revised Aboriginal patient identification posters and brochures for acute health services. The resources aim to improve Aboriginal patient self-identification in hospitals as part of broader efforts across the health care sector to improve Aboriginal health in Victoria.Health services involved in the ICAP program are encouraged to order customised versions of these materials and consider providing copies to local Aboriginal community-controlled health organisations (ACCHOs) and community health services. The Victorian Department of Health will fund the design and an initial order of these materials for health services.
Health services not involved in the ICAP program may wish to order free, generic Aboriginal patient identification materials produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).Aboriginal patient identification in health services is important. Patient identification enables health services to provide information to patients about services and programs available to them and informs service planning, delivery and outcomes.
